Course Overview

Working as a Security Officer within the Private Security Industry

The Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer within the Private Security Industry qualification is required by law for the grant of a Security Industry Authority licence (SIA), which allows individuals to work as a security guard in the private security industry.

This four-day course is for anyone who provides or carries out contracted security activities as defined by the Security Industry Act 2001.

To be granted this licence an applicant must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass the SIA’s criminality criteria
  • Hold a recognised security guard’s qualification – the Level 2 Award in Security Guarding or the Level 2 Award in Door supervision.

Working in any licensable role without the appropriate SIA licence is a criminal offence. Before applying for an SIA licence, individuals are required to gain this qualification.

Course Content

These include the main characteristics of the private security industry, the importance of safe working practices to comply with legal requirements, the role of a security officer within the private security industry, the law relevant to the role of a security officer, how to recognise, assess and reduce risk in conflict situations and good practice to follow after conflict situations.
